Did
you know?...
- Over 40 years ago, local leaders were
concerned by a projected nursing shortage in our community. After seeing
the success of the community college educational model elsewhere in
the state, they were determined to bring this form of public education
to Monroe County. Thus, with an impetus to provide nursing education
beyond hospital walls, MCC was founded in 1961.
- The Nursing Department is accredited by
the National League for Nursing and the New York State Education Department.
MCC is a member of the League for Innovation in the Community College.
- Since its inception, MCC's nursing program
has graduated over 3,000 individuals who are employed in a variety of
health care settings in Monroe County and beyond.
- Graduates of MCC's nursing program become
members of the profession upon successful completion of the New York
State Licensing Examination for Registered Nurse (NCLEX-RN).
- New York State (NCLEX-RN) pass rate for
MCC consistently surpasses the rates for New York and the nation.
- The Nursing Department participates in
a variety of articulation programs with area colleges and universities
such as Nazareth College, Roberts Wesleyan College, St. John Fisher
College, SUNY Brockport, Keuka College, Excelsior College, and the University
of Rochester. This cooperative arrangement enables nursing graduates
of our program to transfer with full status as a junior or senior to
participating institutions.
- The Nursing Department also participates
in an articulation agreement with Isabella Graham Hart School of Practical
Nursing. This agreement allows graduates of that program to transfer
with full status into the second semester of our program without the
need to take the Excelsior College Challenge examination for Fundamentals
of Nursing.
- While in the program, students affiliate
with a variety of acute care, long term care and community agencies.
Examples of these agencies include: Monroe Community Hospital, ViaHealth
Systems, Unity Health Systems, Strong Health, and The Jewish Home.
- The average age of MCC's nursing student
for 2005 is 33 years old. 20% attend college full time. Approximately
12% are male and 88% are female.
- The Nursing Department's Alumni Newsletter
debuted Fall 2000, and is now published annually.
