Smoke FREE Inside and Out

For information on the college's efforts to move to a tobacco free campus please visit the colleges Tobacco Free website.

The Personal Health and Safety Committee has long been concerned for the safety of the people working and attending classes at MCC as it relates to the hazards and risks of second hand smoke. As many of the campuses around the country have gone Smoke Free, the College's new policy (effective July 14, 2008) of Smoke FREE Inside and Out within a designated perimeter will benefit the campus in the following ways:

  • Ensure compliance with Monroe County and New York State codes.
  • Provide a simple definition of the areas where smoking is permitted.
  • Reduce the number of air quality complaints due to smoking.
  • Reduce the number of mulch fires near the entrances caused by improperly discarded cigarettes.
  • Reduce the amount of cigarette butts and debris near the college’s entrances and exits.
  • Improve the overcrowding conditions near entrances where smokers congregate and non-smokers have to walk through the “gauntlet” of smoke to gain access to the building.
  • Remove smokers from the terrace level of Buildings Two/Three which reduces the risk of fire or damage to the roof membrane.
  • Provide a consistent message with local hospitals using the same visuals and signage
  • Have a policy which will be easier to educate on, adhere to and enforce.

For our students, employees and visitors, we recognize this policy may lead to some uncomfortable situations. It is our goal to do all we can to minimize this by:

  • Clearly stating our policy and delineating our Brighton Campus Smoke FREE perimeter or the Damon Campus Smoke FREE perimeter.
  • Making over-the-counter nicotine replacement products, such as gum and lozenges, conveniently available for purchase at our College Bookstore. Regular semester hours: M-Thurs 8 AM- 6 PM and Fri 8 AM - 4:45 PM.
  • Offer smoking cessation programming throughout the semester.
  • Contact Health Services in R. Thomas Flynn Campus Center, bldg 3-165, at extension 2018
