Service-Learning Courses in Criminal Justice

Course Number: CRJ 121 Course Title: Criminal Justice Education Internship I Credits: 3 Credits Description: An activity designed to enhance both the theoretical and educational concepts learned in the practical work experience gained by working 90 hours during a semester in an approved criminal justice agency. This course is also designed to assist you in your career exploration. You are required to find the right agency in which to do your internship. To get the most out of this course you should be working in an agency and in a position that best represents your career goal. Papers and assignments will be completed on the work experinces and their educational value. Prerequisite(s): Prerequisites: Successful completion of CRJ 101 and CRJ 103, or permission of instructor. Service Project (CRJ 121-CC2): Students in this course have a wide variety of service-learning internship options, including the PAC-TAC neighborhood watch program. PAC-TAC students based out of Damon City Campus help patrol the downtown pedestrian Skyway. The complete list of placements is available from the Law and Criminal Justice Department; Service-Learning placements are listed in Red.  For information on criteria for your placement, contact Susan Bender at 262-1710 or by email at sbender@monroecc.edu (90 hours) F-08 Course Number: CRJ 211 Course Title: Community Values and the Administration of Justice Credits: 3 Credits Description: The inter-relationship of community values and ethical conduct in the administration of justice is explored. Through interaction and study, the student will become aware of how community and professional expectations can affect role performance. Open communication and accountability within and without the justice process will be stressed. (It is strongly suggested that students register for this course during their final semester before graduation.) Three class hours. Prerequisite(s): Prerequisites: CRJ 121 or 222 taken concurrently or previously completed and successful completion of 21 CRJ credit hours or permission of instructor. Service Project (CRJ 211-CC1): Students will have the opportunity to collaborate with the Rochester neighborhood association, Group 14621 to provide after school workshops focusing on various safety issues, crime prevention strategies, and community value development. (20 hours – Option) F-08 Course Number: CRJ 222 Course Title: Criminal Justice Education Internship II Credits: 4 Credits Description: An activity designed to enhance the Criminal Justice student's theoretical and educational concepts with practical work experience gained by working 180 hours during a semester with a cooperative Criminal Justice Agency. Seminars will be held and papers written on the work experiences and their educational value. One hundred eighty field work hours. (It is strongly suggested that students register for this course during their final semester before graduation.) Prerequisite(s): Prerequisites: Successful completion of CRJ 101 and CRJ 103. Service Project (CRJ 222-CC1) : Students in this course can opt to participate in the DCC WATCH service-learning placement, The DCC WATCH students are based out of Damon City Campus and help patrol the downtown campus in areas where there is need.
