Course Number: EDU 100 Course Title: Introduction to the Teaching Profession Credits: 1 Credit Description: A seminar introducing students to the field of teaching. Topics include current learning standards, lesson plan components, the realities of teaching as a career, State Education requirements, professional expectations, and an introduction to teaching strategies. This course provides students with the opportunity to explore the field of teaching, reflect on their interest in education, and develop connections with other future educators. One class hour. Service Project (EDU 100-CC1, CC2): Students will be working in teams to complete a literacy kit for area childcare center(s). The project focuses on literacy needs in Monroe and surrounding counties. (5 hours) F-10 Service Project (EDU 100-181, CC3, CC4, CC5, CC6): Students will be working in teams to complete a literacy kit for area childcare center(s). The project focuses on literacy needs in Monroe and surrounding counties. (5 hours - Option) F-10         Course Number: EDU 150 Course Title: Performance and Presentation Skills for Educators Credits: 3 Credits Description: Teachers must communicate effectively in order to achieve their goal of student learning and success. This course uses the performing arts as a point of reference and enables participants to develop materials and present them effectively in a variety of teaching situations. Learning styles, oral presentation, body language, the use of props, proxemics and room arrangement, and audio visuals will be the skills developed through this course. These skills will be compared to those used in a variety of performing arts venues so that appropriate stage techniques can be integrated into student teaching/presentations assignments. Fulfills the requirements for a Humanities course. Three class hours. (SUNY-A) Service Project (EDU 150-CC1, CC3): Students will be partnering with Rochester City School District elementary students to co-author children’s books and create performances that address curriculum standards. This service learning project will culminate in a celebration of literacy where MCC and elementary students will perform and share their creations to children in area childcare centers. (20 hours-Option) F-10 Course Number: EDU 200 Course Title: Foundations of Education Credits: 3 Credits Description: This course will explore the American education system through a social justice perspective. It will focus on the foundations of the American education system, with emphasis on the historical, philosophical, and socio-cultural roots of education. In addition, students will explore the influences of political, economic, legal and ethical bases of American education. Within this framework, contemporary educational values and issues will be critically examined. Three class hours. Prerequisite(s): Prerequisite OR Corequisite: EDU 100; Service Project (EDU 200-CC1, CC2, CC4, CC6): Students in this course have two (2) choices for their service- learning project: tutoring OR developing literacy kits. TUTORING: Students may choose to tutor at any of the approved tutoring sites. The list of sites will be given out at the beginning of the semester. Students will work one-on-one or in groups each week. A variety of age groups and subject matters are available. LITERACY KITS: Students may develop literacy kits for use in various childcare centers in the Rochester area. Ages for the kits will be available at the beginning of the semester. (20 hours - option) F-10   Course Number: EDU 208 Course Title: Guided Observation in Education Credits: 3 Credits Description: Guided Observation in Education is designed to provide the student with an opportunity to (1) explore the profession of teaching at an early point in the student's academic career, (2) observe in a classroom from the perspective of a teacher, (3) meet with the classroom teacher to discuss issues covered in the seminar and issues that arise in the classroom, (4) participate in classroom activities addressing unmet educational needs such as: lesson planning, working with small groups, one-on-one support, and (5) reflect on course objectives as experienced through fieldwork placement. One and one-half class hours, four fieldwork hours. Upon successful completion of this course, students will earn 20 hours of service-learning credit. Prerequisite(s): Prerequisite: EDU 200 with a grade of C or higher and PSY 201 or PSY 202 with a grade of C or higher   Service Project (EDU 208-CC1, CC2, CC3, CC4): Students will participate in classroom activities for 20 hours addressing educational needs such as: lesson planning, working with small groups, one on one support, correcting papers, and responding to school led initiatives. 40 hours of observation is also included in this course.(20 hours) F-10
