Service-Learning Courses in Sociology

Course Number: SOC 101 Course Title: Introductory Sociology Credits: 3 Credits Description: A survey of the major concepts employed in the systematic study of human relationships, with emphasis on society, culture, social interaction, socialization, groups, bureaucracy, institutions, collective behavior, social stratification, social control, social change and sociology as a field of knowledge. Three class hours. (SUNY-SS) Service Project (SOC 101-013): Students in this section will have the option to partner with The Global Interest Group for their Spring 2009 event, The Silk Road.  Students will design questionnaires directed at and conduct at least two interviews to, members of Chinese, Afghan, Iranian, Syrian communities and members of Arts and Cultural Council of Rochester. Students will help with making informational posters and display and distribute materials for the event and deliver flyers and invitations to the membership of these organizations.  (20 hours - Option) S-09   Service Project (SOC 101-CC1): In a collaborative with Nazareth and St. John Fisher Colleges, and the Ganondagan Historic Site, MCC students in SOC 101-CC1 will study and contrast American society in the era of the Native American Seneca Nation at Ganondagan and that of society in the City of Rochester today. In particular, students will focus on conflict, community building, and peacemaking. They will create teaching tools and design learning projects that can be used to effectively teach elementary and middle school students about the culture and methods of Native American peacemaking as they apply to urban neighborhoods today. (10 hours - Option) S-09
