Service-Learning Courses in Business

Course Number: BUS 104 Course Title: Introduction to Business Credits: 3 Credits Description: An introductory study of business including organizational forms, the function of production, finance, marketing and human resources. Additional topics will be environmental factors which impact business such as government business ethics and current business issues. Three class hours.   Service Project (BUS 104-004, 007): Students will partner with the American Cancer Society on their Relay for Life event. Students will focus on the first day of the event: “Paint the Town Purple” by working in teams with one of the following communities: Spencerport, Honeoye Falls, Webster, Canandaigua. Students will develop and execute a strategy to Paint that town purple, the color of Relay for Life. (20 hours) F-09 Service Project (BUS 104-009, 016, 027): Students will be partnering with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.   See professor for more details. (20 hours) F-09 Service Project (BUS 104-012): Students will be involved in the planning and executing of the Community Entrepreneurial Forum to be held 11/12/2009 on the Brighton Campus (20 hours) F-09   Course Number: BUS 110 Course Title: Entrepreneurial Studies I Credits: 3 Credits Description: First of two small business courses designed for those interested in learning how to start and manage a small business. It begins by defining and explaining the nature of small business in today's economy and entrepreneurs in the context of the free enterprise system. The topics include small business opportunities, legal forms of ownership, franchising, starting a new venture, sources of financing, developing marketing strategies and human resource management. Students will also learn the key components of a business plan, review case studies, and undertake a major project. Three class hours. Service Project (BUS 110-182): Students will be involved in the planning and executing of the Community Entrepreneurial Forum to be held 11/12/2009 on the Brighton Campus (20 hours) F-09 Service Project (BUS 110-003, 181): Students will have the opportunity to partner with the PathStone organization to evaluate their web-based entrepreneurship learning modules, “Learning to Earn”, and make recommendations for changes/additions/updates.
