SVL 106 - Topics in Service-Learning

This course is designed to cover service-learning topics of special interest. Offerings will vary each semester, but each course is intended to increase students awareness of social issues within our community related to the course topic. Students will participate in service projects that meet the needs of the community and are integrated into the curriculum of the course (30 service hours). Students will participate in structured critical reflection seminars where they will analyze and evaluate their service experiences and make essential connections between civic engagement and course curriculum. Fulfills the requirements for a Social Science course.

Service Project (SVL 106-CC1):
In the aftermath of hurricanes Katrina and Rita, student and community groups all over the country have been deployed to assist with the clean-up and rebuilding of the areas affected. Through the course SVL 106: Topics in Service-Learning, students will go to New Orleans and partner with the New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity (NOAHH) to assist families in Greater New Orleans communities rebuild.

Alternative break trip will happen during Intersession 2010, January 11th through January 17th. Coursework will begin in November.
