HED 115 - Death and Dying

A study of the dying process, death, ceremonies and rituals in many cultures. Deals with issues of loss experiences, the fear of death, understanding reactions to death, near-death experiences, euthanasia, suicide, and current practices and trends in the care and treatment of the terminally ill. Three class hours.

Service Project (HED 115-003, 005, 006):
Students will have the option to participate in a hospice care environment, where residents of The Serenity House, Isaiah House, and St. John’s Home have been deemed by a medical professional as having less than three months to live. While offering support as companions to terminal individuals, their family, and their friends; MCC students will learn hands-on the  traditional philosophical and theological attitudes toward death, how persons and their families handle the dying process, the stages or phases of the dying process likely to be experienced by the terminally ill, cultural interpretations of death, religious perspectives on death, grief and coping, as well as become familiar with the needs of the terminally ill and how hospice is organized to meet those needs. (10 hours) S-08

HED 116 - Issues in Child Development and Health | Course Descriptions | Monroe Community College

HED 116 - Issues in Child Development and Health

Explores health content areas, defined by the New York State Health Education Department, that affect the physical and emotional health of children, ages 5-13. Issues that follow are addressed from a teacher's perspective: communication skills, family life, keeping kids active, safety education, death, substance use and abuse, school violence, childhood stress, nutrition, mental health and environmental factors. This course will include certification in identifying and reporting suspected child abuse/maltreatment, and Safe Schools Against Violence in Education Legislation. Three class hours.

Service Project (HED 116-CC1):
Students in this course will work in groups to develop and present a workshop for clients of the Alternatives For Battered Women educational program. Topics include: daycare, nutrition and activity, bullying, common health issues, childhood stress, and death and loss. (15 hours) S-08

HED 209 - Drugs and Behavior | Course Descriptions | Monroe Community College

HED 209 - Drugs and Behavior

This course is designed to inform the student about the issue of chemical dependencies. Basic pharmacology in addition to the biological, psychological and sociological reasons for drug-seeking behavior will be discussed. Topics pertaining to both legal and illegal drug use, abuse and dependency will be covered. This will be accomplished through the use of lectures, videos, class discussions and reaction papers. Three class hours.

Students will be partnering with the Human Service Department to plan for and host the Human Services Annual Conference. The conference focus is on addictions. HED students will be developing presentations and table information for attendees. (20 hours – Option) S-08
