Services
Nurses are available on a confidential
basis to care for basic injuries and illnesses and consult about personal
health improvement.
The Health Services Department does not
provide primary care - and therefore does not serve as a substitute
for your physician or primary health care provider.
We do provide basic care for minor illnesses
and injuries. We can also assist you with questions regarding health-related
concerns, health care referrals, illness/accident insurance, and compliance
with immunization requirements. In addition, we work with Health Career
Program students to comply with the medical requirements of affiliating
clinical agencies. We may refer you to the part-time Nurse Practitioner
if she is available or will set up an appointment for you.
We provide some immunizations and some
medical supplies such as over-the-counter medications, band-aids, eyewash,
splints, etc. We also have a wide variety of instructional materials
on health issues/concerns.
Usual reasons for illness visits are:
sore throats; colds/flu; rashes; injuries; abdominal pain; chest pain;
urinary tract infections; insect bites.
Emergencies are referred to the appropriate Health Care setting. A physician
is not on site.
For all medical emergencies and immediate
assistance call Public Safety at
extension 2911.

We have several health career programs:
Nursing, Dental Hygiene, Radiological Technology, Emergency Medical
Technology, Nursing Assistant Program, Health Information Technology,
and Massage Therepy. Each of theses health career program students must
provide a physical exam, meet certain medical criteria and have these
requirements reviewed by our nursing staff. In addition, each of these
students is required to have an annual reassessment and an updated PPD
except the EMS, Nursing Assistant and Medical Records Programs.
Physical forms for entering students are
sent via mail upon notification from department secretaries after registering.
Students are notified by Health Services for their annual reassessment.

Emotional counseling is available for
crisis intervention and stress-related illness. We will arrange confidential
referrals if needed or refer you to the Counseling Center.
The
Counseling Center provides emergency assistance to students who
experience emotional/psychological crisis while on campus. A counselor
will meet with a student to determine the appropriate course of action
and arrange any necessary referrals and follow-through.
If you have a disability, you should contact
the Coordinator for Students with Disabilities at Building 11, Room
208, (585) 292-2357. If you wish to speak to a nurse in Health Services
about your special needs, we are available to discuss referrals and
other services available to you. To ensure your success at MCC, we collaborate
with the Counseling Center and
the Coordinator for Students with Disabilities.

Handicapped parking is obtained through
the Public Safety Parking Office
located at 7-341, (585) 292-2700.
If you are absent from class for medical
reasons, and if you contact Health Services, we will notify professors
in writing only after a two-week absence. At the time of your call,
we can provide you with faculty names and telephone extensions and you
should contact them to arrange make-up work. Medical excuses from classes
are not provided.
Students who do not complete the New York
State immunization requirements will be withdrawn from classes
after a 30 day period, according to New York State law. A Health Services
hold will be placed on the students' record, which prevents any student
transactions. Affected students will not be able to attend classes,
or receive course credit. Tuition is forfeited and financial aid will
be withdrawn. Students will not be able to register for future classes,
and can be descheduled.
In order to rectify the process, immunizations
must be completed and up to date, and entered into the Health Services
database. Reinstatement to classes requires students to get written
permission to re-enter class from faculty members for each course. Reinstatement
forms are available through Health Services. Completed reinstatement
forms are then submitted to Registration and Records. All steps must
be completed in order to successfully receive course credit and grades.
