As students living away from home for perhaps the first time, maintaining your health independently will now be one of your new responsibilities. Please take a moment to visit the Living Healthy side of Health Services’ website for tips on how to live a healthy life in order to get the maximum from your college experience. For more information on living in the Residence Halls please the Res Halls website.
Speaking of staying safe, please visit our Emergency page and take a moment to program Public Safety’s phone number into your cellular phone and to program ICE (In Case of Emergency) contacts into your phone as well.
The staff in Health Services wish you well in your college career and please don’t wait until you are sick or injured to stop by for a visit.
Health Insurance
It is important for students living in the residence halls to have health insurance. MCC requires students to submit proof of a health insurance plan, whether it is an outside plan or through the optional sickness plan offered by MCC. Health insurance enables you to receive medical care with less financial risk in case of illness or injury.
Meningitis
MCC requires students, no matter what age, to either submit proof of having the meningitis vaccine or sign a waiver declining the vaccine. MCC does not offer this vaccine, but you can receive it at the Monroe County Health Department for $132, or through your own physician. Meningitis, although uncommon, is caused by strains of bacteria, and is spread through respiratory secretions. It can progress very quickly and be life-threatening. Meningitis has become a concern on college campuses because of the higher risk among young people living in closer communities. College freshman living in residence halls or dormitories have a six-times greater chance of contracting meningitis than other college students according to the CDC. Nurses in Health Service
The registered nurses in Health Services are available to see students for basic illnesses/injuries during the hours of operation ( 8:45-4:45). You do not need an appointment to see a nurse and there is no fee to be seen. Health Services does not offer primary care, and some services, such as allergy shots, must be provided through a primary care physician (PCP). If you are living on campus and are from out of town, you can be linked with a PCP at the Folsom Health Center. More information is available at Health Services.
If you are ill or injured after Health Services is closed, please refer to the guidelines for after hours care.
N.O.W. (“Nurses on Wheels”)
The nurses are also available as educational resources on health issues and often come to the residence halls to do programming or to address any health concerns students may have. Please let the nurses know of any health questions you may have either directly or through your Resident Advisor. Previous programs include programs regarding emergency first aid, questions about sex, alcohol, drugs, and healthy quick meals. Educational literature is also available in the Health Services office.
There are three registered professional nurses in the Health Services. Each nurse is assigned to a residence hall and is available to students as a health resource.
