Sustainability is an emerging discipline that studies the interactions of humans, economics and ecology in a holistic manner. It seeks solutions and innovations that not only insure the well-being of future generations, but which also improve the well-being of this generation by creating healthy environments, vibrant communities, and strong, sustainable economies.

Unlike environmentalism, which often pits the natural world against economic and social needs, sustainability offers a new paradigm, under which all three areas can benefit and prosper. Sustainability is an inter-disciplinary area of inquiry that studies numerous processes, activities, courses and subjects. Courses at MCC that deal with sustainability are designated GR on the Class Schedule, and can be used to fulfill requirements toward the Sustainability Certificate.
