Why would you want to take a class in the Speech discipline?
Why not?
"It's not what you say, it's how you say it"
The content covered in these classes truly develops skills for living! Communication is something you do and is done to you every day. Why not learn the meaning behind the message and how to create the outcome you want? Skills learned include dealing successfully with a crisis, having your message presented clearly and critically analyzing the effect of the media on our lives. Communication is part of our daily lives, make it count whether you're listening or sending the message.
How do you land the job you really want? How do you build successful relationships? By being a skilled communicator. Whether you take courses in public speaking, public relations or journalism, you will learn what it takes to understand an audience, select a message, polish and perfect a message and receive feedback about your message.
"These are lifelong skills."
Today's global environment demands that all of us perfect these skills. Success on the job no longer means aptitude in a given area or profession. To be hired, promoted and, yes, understood requires basic skills in understanding and being understood by others.
"Get immediate results"
The skills addressed in speech communication classes can have a direct and immediate impact on the quality of your relationships. Each of us has the ability to connect with others deeply. That connection can be one of life's greatest treasures.
"There is great power in words."
There truly is great power in words. The ability to communicate effectively is the thread that ties together the multitude of skills that are needed for success in this very complex world of ours. Often, we can better understand and negotiate our world by first understanding ourselves, and how and why we communicate and how to improve ourselves and our relationships by improving our communication skills. Speech communication has been recognized as a powerful influence on human life since before the days of Plato and Aristotle. Begin to master these skills and you will gain some of the great power that lies in your words.
"Communication is not what you say... "
... or thought you said. It's what they hear, and what they think you meant. Therefore, communication is not intent, it is perception and (their) perception equals reality." Anonymous-
The above quote was given to me by a student a number of years ago. I think it perfectly captures what so often happens in our everyday communication. We think we're speaking the same language (we're even using the same words) and yet so often things can go terribly wrong! People often take communication courses with the expectation of getting the other people in their lives to change. I let them know that the only people that they have a prayer of changing are themselves. My focus is on helping people understand how to take personal responsibility for their end of the communication process. In doing so they are hopefully, more likely to get their point across and get what they want from someone.
