Certification

Students receiving veterans education benefits must be certified for their benefits each semester in which they are enrolled. Certification is accomplished after course registration to ensure that the VA will pay you the appropriate amount of money for the credits that you are taking and to ensure that the courses you are taking are helping you to meet your educational goals at MCC.

Certification is done on an attendance-only basis. This means that VA will only pay benefits during the actual time that students are attending classes. Students are considered full-time by MCC if they are taking 12 or more credits in any given 15 week semester. However, the VA will only pay full-time rates if all 12 of the credits are taken across the entire semester. Thus, if a student is taking 11 credits across the entire semester and one additional credit for only part of the semester, the student will not be paid for full-time status by VA during the time that he/she is only taking 11 credits. Questions about your VA status for benefits should be referred to the Veteran Services Representative at MCC or to the VA at 1-888-442-4551.

Continued certification is also dependent on academic progress. Satisifactory academic progress for continuation of VA benefits is the achievement of a C average or maintaining a 2.00/4.00 grade point average. When a student falls below 2.00, MCC is required to notify the VA that the student is failing to meet academic standards and the VA may choose to suspend benefits. Students who are having academic problems are encouraged to contact the VA counselor at MCC without delay.
