| MCC encourages all interested
faculty and staff to develop web pages for inclusion on the MCC web site.
Web-savvy users may develop their own sites, or MCC staff are available
to design and upload web pages. Either way, all staff are asked to review
the following information before embarking on their web
site designs:
All sites must comply with MCC's web policies and requirements. The checklist
will aid in site development and help ensure site requirements are met.
MCC Web Development
Overview
The Web Development Manager. The Web Development Manager is the
official liaison to the College community concerning the publication of
pages on MCC’s Website. The Web Development Manager acts as systems administrator
for the MCC Web site, is responsible for site and systems documentation,
and coordinates Web-based applications development.
The Web Development Team. The Web Development team is responsible
for implementing MCC Web-based projects. The team is chaired by the Web
Development Manager and consists of the Web Specialists and a Web Technician.
The Web Development team sets guidelines for consistency of the interface
design for the Website and is responsible for site maintenance and design
implementation. Additionally, a Web Editor is appointed by the Director
of Public Affairs to review web content to assure accuracy and proper
representation of MCC throughout the website. The Development Team assures
that the graphic design these pages are a professional and accurate reflection
of MCC’s image.

What We Can Do for You…
Web Site Design
Department Web Sites
Department sites are built by the MCC web team using
HTML (hypertext markup language) and other developmental tools. The computing team is working to have
a web presence for every department at MCC, incorporating the updated
style developed over the past few years. (For examples, please see Student
Services, Criminal Justice, or Athletics.)
The home page of each department web site is accompanied by a photo
montage, which contains photos relevant to that department. We encourage
departments to submit photos to make their sites "come alive"
for visitors! (please note: photos of students or non-MCC staff need
to have a signed publicity release form.)
New sites are being designed in the new style, and older sites are
being re-designed to incorporate this style. We encourage departments
to contact us regarding updates, new photos, etc. Current content keeps
viewers coming back!
Faculty Web Sites
Faculty sites are now being built using a web-based program called "Manila." The primary advantage of using Manila
is that now, faculty members can access and edit their sites from anywhere through a web browser, and see those revisions go live immediately.
Faculty interested in building their own sites in Manila can sign up
for training classes (see below). If you want
a site but don't want to build it or update it yourself, please contact
us; we're happy to build a site for you!
What Should Be In Your Web Site?
Department sites should, at a minimum, contain the following
information:
- Department Location
- Faculty and Staff links
- Course Descriptions
- Program Descriptions, if applicable
- Contact Information
Faculty sites are at their owner's disposal. Generally, most faculty
sites contain:
- Contact info
- Office Hours
- Office Location
- Course info
- Syllabi
Some faculty also have included example projects, links related to
the course material, and PowerPoint presentations. Current faculty sites
can be found under "Faculty Web Pages" in the "A-Z Index"
of the MCC site.
How to Submit Graphics for Web Publication
Graphics may include photos, clip art, charts, drawings, etc. You
may provide graphics to us electronically via email or disk. You
may also supply us with photos or artwork to be scanned (items must
be 8 ½" by 11" or smaller). We can crop and compress
graphics as needed to fit within the site format and to allow for fast
download times over the web.
Please note: if you are loading photos onto your Manila site, be sure
to compress them before uploading them. Photos generally should be no
larger than 50 KB, though no more than 20 KB is preferred, with a pixel width that will not push page content past the horizontal boundaries of the screen. (Several free photo editors, such as Paint.net Picasa, VicMan's
Photo Editor and GIMP,
are available on the web.)
How to Submit Documents for Web Publication
Documents will be presented on the web either as HTML web pages, or as
Adobe .pdf (portable document format) files. Please provide content for your pages in electronic format, either by emailing them or transferring them
through the M drive shared directory. We do not offer keyboarding or transcription services.
For documents that will become html pages: Documents
may be provided as MS Word, RTF or any other text-based file. Highly formatted Word doc files (i.e. with tabs, columns or tables) are not easily converted to html. Documents that need to maintain very specific formatting, that does not translate easily to web presentation formatting, may be saved and presented as PDF documents.
For documents to be presented as .pdf downloads:
Send the document to us either as a Word or text-based file, or as
a .pdf file. If you want to present a .pdf but are unable to convert
it yourself, please send us
the Word file and we will convert it for you. (Free .pdf converters
such as PDF
Creator, PrimoPDF,
and PDF995 are
available on the web.)
Training
Technical training Track N: World Wide Web page Development with Manila, in the
ETS technical
training schedule is a series of three 2-hour classes that run every
month. You can access the schedule and register for the classes online.
If your schedule does not allow time for the scheduled classes, individual
niche training sessions can be arranged. Contact Carol
Burritt.
All new faculty and department sites are reviewed by the Web Oversight
Team. When you feel your pages are complete, we will begin the review
of your pages to ensure that they adhere to MCC's policies and page
requirements. This usually takes from one - four days or so, depending
on the complexity of the site.
After the review is completed, your pages will be published on the MCC
Web site. Following this, you will be responsible for all subsequent changes
and updates to your pages.
Accessing the Work In Progress
Directory
All institutional HTML pages on MCC's web site are created in the Work In Progress
(WIP) directory of the web server. Finished pages are then "moved
live" to the public server.
Some departments have staff who may be developing and revising department
pages themselves. Below are directions to access the WIP) server:
You will need to create a new mapped network
drive to access your portion of the MCC website. To do this:
- On your desktop, right click on Network
Neighborhood, or My Network Places and choose Map Network Drive.
- In the drop down Drive field, choose any
drive letter that appears without a designated connection.
- In the folder field type \\mcc-b161, choose
the Browse button and scroll down the list to the highlighted icon.
- Click on the + to expand the mcc-b161 list
and scroll down to your department or user folder, select it and click
OK.
- When your folder name displays in the Folder
field of the previous window (Example: \\mcc-b161\ets),
select Finish
Your WIP folder can now be seen through “My
Computer” as a network hard drive.
Mac Users:
Contact the Webmaster at webmaster@monroecc.edu

College Web Site Policies
-
Official College pages currently must be stored on
the MCC Web site server. This insures that College pages are effectively
and efficiently backed up, included in global fixes of broken links
and other global changes, and accessed when determining statistics
for MCC Web site activity, such as number of requests per page.
-
The College has the right to remove any materials on the Web that
do not adhere to MCC policies. In particular, this includes policies
regarding reproduction of copyrighted materials, computer
usage, privacy, accessibility, etc.
-
If pages are misrepresentative,
outdated, contain broken links, or do not conform to MCC Web policies
or page requirements, the Webmaster will notify the submitter. If
the submitter fails to submit critical content updates or fails to request removal of the
files within 2 days after notification, the Webmaster may make the
changes or may remove those files from the public Web site.
-
Submitters may not delete or modify files located in shared Web directories
unless they are the file creators or have obtained the express permission
of the file creator to delete these files.
-
Use of any MCC logotype or image not received through the Webmaster
must be approved by the Public Affairs office.
-
The College has the right to remove any inappropriate pages. Inappropriate
pages include those with sexist, racist, defamatory, abusive, and/or
harassing materials, or do not comply with mandated accessibility guidelines.
If an individual wishes to contest the judgment of the Webmaster or
a policy that the Webmaster is enforcing, he or she should raise the
issue in writing with the Oversight Committee chairs. The issue will
then be reviewed by the MCC Web Oversight Committee.
-
Do not include another individual's personal data. On College pages,
obtain your colleagues' prior permission before including contact
information (i.e. College phone and fax numbers, e-mail addresses,
etc.)
-
Pages with department information must have the portions which contain
that information approved by the appropriate department head. Student
pages created as part of a class project must be submitted through
the faculty member. Other pages created by students must be facilitated
through a sponsoring department or club advisor.
-
Institutional pages should not duplicate the following master information:
Course Descriptions, Master (Class) Schedule, Programs of Study, Academic
Calendar, or College Directory information. This master information should be displayed from the appropriate database source, either through links or includes.
-
Page submitters who wish to request corrections of the MCC master
information must do so through the MCC departments responsible for
the information. These departments are:
| Content |
Department: |
| College Directory |
Communications & Network Services |
| Class Schedule |
Records and Registration |
- Course Descriptions
- Programs of Study
- Academic Calendar
|
