In September 2002, the Interdisciplinary Programs division in conjunction
with the English/Philosophy department and Student Services established a
writing award in memory of Professor Alan B. Shaw (1942-2002).
Alan Shaw loved teaching and touched the lives of many students. He was
noted for assigning topics that evoked the kind of critical, risky, and
intimate writing that led to openness and compassion in the classroom. The
annual Alan B. Shaw Memorial Essay committee chooses various topics to
honor Alan for his tireless dedication to writing and the writing process.
A monetary prize of $150 is awarded to the essay that best engages the
passion and spirit of the chosen topic. Watch for contest announcements
during the spring semester.
