NUR 111 - Fundamentals of Nursing - WR

7 Credits

NUR 111 focuses on the Basic Needs of the non acute adult patient to provide quality, safe patient centered care for diverse populations. The MCC nursing program’s conceptual framework and the core competencies of Associate Degree Nursing practice: Professional Identity, Nursing Judgment, Human Flourishing, and Spirit of Inquiry, are introduced. Students use knowledge and science to begin to assess a patient’s ability to meet Basic Needs and to implement fundamental nursing interventions. Two class hours, three conference hours, six clinical laboratory hours.

Prerequisites: Grade of C or better in high school chemistry, biology and either Sequential Math, Math A Regents or High School Algebra or MTH 098; Corequisites: NUR 110; PSY 101; BIO 144; and MTH 104, MTH 150, MTH 160 or higher; unless previously taken.

Course Learning Outcomes
1. Apply Nursing Judgment as a core competency of Associate Degree Nursing practice at a fundamental level.
2. Apply Human Flourishing as a core competency of Associate Degree Nursing practice at a fundamental level.
3. Apply Professional Identity as a core competency of Associate Degree Nursing practice at a fundamental level.
4. Apply a Spirit of Inquiry as a core competency of Associate Degree Nursing practice at a fundamental level.
5. Identify data that indicate an individual is meeting Basic Needs.
6. Identify data that indicates an individual needs assistance to meet basic physiologic and safety and security needs.
7. Identify factors that affect an individual’s ability to meet basic physiologic and safety and security needs.
8. Identify and describe each step of the Nursing Process.
9. Collect data related to Basic Needs as the first step of the Nursing Process.
10. Use basic critical thinking to analyze collected data.
11. Select nursing diagnoses that are indicated based on patient assessment as the second step of the Nursing Process.
12. Develop an individualized plan of care through establishment of patient outcomes and nursing interventions as the third step of the Nursing Process.
13. Provide fundamental nursing interventions that prevent, minimize, or relieve alterations in the patient’s ability to meet Basic Needs as the fourth step of the Nursing Process.
14. Evaluate progress toward attainment of patient outcomes as the fifth step of the Nursing Process.
15. Adjust nursing interventions to modify the plan of care as needed.
