HON 195 - Honors Seminar in Critical Analysis - WR

3 Credits

This course begins with presentation and exploration of core critical thinking concepts including but not limited to arguments, fallacies, rules of inference and evidence. Students will examine a selected topic/theme that will develop critical thinking, discussion leading and expository writing abilities. Three class hours. (SUNY-H)

Prerequisite: Permission of Coordinator of Honors Studies.

Course Learning Outcomes
1.State major ideas found in relevant texts.
2.Classify major theories relevant to the section topic.
3.Discuss multiple plausible and relevant theories.
4.Differentiate between common kinds of arguments.
5.Evaluate arguments according to applicable standards.
6.Formulate arguments in response to problems and objections.
7.Demonstrate goal-oriented oral communication.
8.Recognize the effect of personal values in communication and deliberation.
9.Write essays that communicate reasoned positions.
10.Solve practical problems relevant to the section topic.
