This course provides 30 hours of didactic instruction and carries a mandatory 20 hours of phlebotomy practicum with a Clinical Affiliate. The practicum will require light lifting, fine motor skills, determination and selection of color coded supplies and 50 successful venipunctures.
The students will learn to recognize and properly use blood collection equipment while practicing universal precautions. Topics include: Anatomy and Physiology of standard venous and capillary collection sites and properties of venous, capillary and arterial blood. Explaining specimen processing procedures with emphasis on specimen integrity of all samples received in the lab. The use of specialized collection equipment and specialized collection techniques.
Prerequisite: BIO 134 and CLT 100 or permission of instructor
