SPC 144 - Communication and Crisis

3 Credits

This course combines theories of communication and concepts of crisis necessary for dealing appropriately with people in crisis. Topics covered include practical skills: listening and responding, communicating assertively, managing conflict, and how these skills can be used to help people who are dealing with loss, grief, depression, and suicidal ideation. The on-line version of this course requires access to a camcorder. Three class hours. (SUNY-H)

Course Learning Outcomes
1.Apply an active listening model to problem-solve with individuals in crisis.
2.Respond assertively to criticism within the context of crisis communication.
3.Apply "I-language" skills within the context of crisis communication.
4.Apply theories about the grieving process within the context of crisis communication.
5.Differentiate between a normal and a serious/major depression.
6.Apply emotion theory to individuals in crisis.
7.Identify potential for suicide at the low, moderate, and high risk levels.
8.Apply theories and principles within the context of crisis communication.
9.Apply ethical principles and reasoning within the context of suicide assessment.
