New and Updated Course Descriptions

BIO 143 - Human Physiology

This course has been deactivated and no longer offered at MCC

4 Credits

An introduction to the major concepts of physiology as applied to the human organism. An integrated study of human physiology from the cellular to the system level with an emphasis on feedback systems. Laboratory work includes student and demonstration experiments designed to illustrate normal function and physiologic responses to specific stresses. The course is designed for students in Nursing and other health related programs.

Prerequisites: BIO 142 and one of the following: high school chemistry or CHE 100 or CHE 124 or permission of instructor.

Course Learning Outcomes
1. Explain the basic concept of homeostasis and how homeostatic mechanisms apply to body systems.
2. Explain the functional roles of the components of the nervous, muscular, cardiovascular, lymphatic, respiratory, urinary, digestive and reproductive systems.
3. Identify and describe the physiology of the homeostatic mechanisms that control fluid and electrolyte balance, acid - base balance and blood pressure.
4. Measure physiological data and relate these measurements to the functions of body systems.
5. Calculate physiological variables and relate clinical data to physiological function.
6. Use graphs and tables to describe the relationship of data to function in physiological systems.
