HSM 104 - Public Safety Communications

This course will provide students with an understanding of the fundamentals of communication and their application in emergency situations. Students will examine the use of oral and written communications in various levels of emergency and crisis situations and will learn to identify internal and external audiences and analyze their information needs. Students will also gain an understanding of the use of communications systems and the role of technology in facilitating communication during crises. Three credits.

Course Learning Outcomes
1. Describe the history of Public Safety Communications.
2. Discuss the importance of communications in a public safety environment using such techniques as effective listening, interpersonal communications, empathy, and understanding.
3. Discuss the importance of customer service in a public safety communications setting.
4. Describe where different types of communication are best utilized in a public safety setting such as verbal communication, written communication, body language, and broadcasted communications.
5. Examine the successes and failures of public safety communications systems.
6. Discuss what Next Generation 911 (NG911) means to public safety communications.
