ENG 209 - Twentieth Century Novel

A study of themes, techniques, and cultural contexts of selected 20th century novels. The course explores eternal human values expressed in the novels such as love, honor, pride, sacrifice and endurance. Representative international authors may include Achebe, Baldwin, Cather, Garcia, Marquez, Hesse, Lessing, Markandaya, Joyce and Kafka.

Prerequisite(s): English 101 with a C or better, placement into English 200, or instructor permission.

Course Learning Outcomes
1. Analyze 20th century novels.
2. Interpret 20th century novels using a variety of critical perspectives.
3. Explain the relationship between select historical events/trends and the studied novels.
4. Describe the relationship between various movements, such as Modernism, Post-modernism, Magical Realism, or 20th century novels.
5. Explain the characteristics of the 20th century novel.
6. Write a thesis-driven essay using literature as a primary source.
7. Apply the appropriate formal conventions when writing about literature.
