DAS 110 - Preclinical Dental Assisting

4 Credits

This course provides foundational didactic content and preclinical/laboratory practice of essential dental assisting skills and chair-side dental assisting functions. Topics include examination and assessment procedures, equipment and materials, instrumentation techniques, treatment procedures and the legal supportive functions/skills performed by a licensed dental assistant during restorative procedures. Preclinical practice will prepare students for clinical externship experiences.

Course Learning Outcomes
1.Describe the organizational, educational and scope of practice structure of each member of the dental team.
2.Apply procedures for the operation of, maintenance and infection control for the dental unit and equipment in the dental operatory.
3.Collect a patient's medical and dental histories, vital signs, and orofacial examination findings.
4.Demonstrate the techniques for safe and efficient four-handed dentistry.
5.Identify the functions of specific dental instruments.
6.Describe the proper processing and sterilization of specific dental instruments.
7.Apply the foundational concepts for evacuation and moisture control during patient treatment.
8.Demonstrate procedures for isolation and retraction during restorative procedures.
9.Demonstrate the manipulation and placement of various dental cements.
10.Demonstrate accurate general and periodontal charting procedures using specific charting systems.
11.Demonstrate restorative dental procedures.
12.Demonstrate procedures for the administration of anesthetic agents.
