Monroe Community College provides a mainstreamed learning environment for students who identify themselves with a disability to the Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) office. In accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the College ensures that admission, services, activities, facilities, and academic programs are accessible to and usable by qualified students with disabilities. Students must be able to function independently, are responsible for informing the SSD office of their need for accommodation(s), and must provide appropriate disability documentation for services. Accommodations are determined on a case-by case basis.

Requesting Accommodations at MCC

1. Submit Disability Documentation
Students requesting accommodations must provide appropriate disability documentation to the Services for Student with Disabilities office on the Brighton Campus or to the Student Engagement Center on the Downtown Campus. Students who are deaf or hard of hearing requesting interpreting services on any campus should contact the Brighton SSD office. All requests for accommodations should be made at least 30 days in advance of the need; therefore, all requests should be made as early as possible.
    Documentation must be written by a licensed or credentialed examiner; which includes a diagnostic statement identifying the disability; a description of the diagnostic methodology; a description of the current functional limitations; a description of the expected duration and progression of the condition; and a rationale and justification for all requested accommodations.
      Appropriate documentation may include a relevant psychological evaluation, medical letter/report, audiogram, etc. Along with a comprehensive evaluation, other helpful documents may include an Individual Education Plan (IEP) and 504 Plan. Any and all information received by the college regarding an individual's disability is strictly confidential.
        2. Contact the SSD office
        Students are responsible to contact the SSD office to confirm receipt of any documentation emailed/faxed/mailed and to schedule an intake meeting.

        3. Attend the Intake Meeting
        An intake meeting is mandatory for all students requesting accommodations. During an intake meeting the student will meet with an SSD staff member to complete necessary paperwork, discuss documentation received, barriers experienced within the academic setting, requested accommodations, etc.

        Accommodations become active once the intake meeting has concluded and students then have electronic access to their accommodation letters. It is the student’s responsibility to distribute the accommodation letter to each of their instructors. Students are strongly encouraged to speak to each instructor to discuss their individual accommodations, learning strengths, and learning challenges. Students that do not provide their instructor with an accommodation letter are not eligible to receive accommodations.
