Alumni Honored for Achievements, Community Leadership (11/28/2012)

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Cerri A. Banks, Ph.D. ’97 (South Hadley, Mass.), Richard C. Brienzi ’79 (Fairport), Peter Monacelli ’73 (Rochester) and James M. Sydor ’71 (Penfield) were recently inducted into the MCC Alumni Hall of Fame. The Monroe Community College Foundation’s Alumni Committee selected the four based on their professional achievements, support of Monroe Community College and/or the MCC Foundation, and service to the community.

Cerri A. Banks, Ph.D. ’97
An author and educator, Banks is the vice president for student affairs and dean of the college for Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Mass. She says her success in the field of education is a direct result of beginning her academic career at MCC’s Damon City Campus. Following MCC, she pursued advanced studies in elementary and special education, cultural foundations of education and women’s studies at Syracuse University. Prior to Mount Holyoke College, she served as dean at William Smith College and as an education professor at Hobart and William Smith Colleges. She has authored two books, Black Women Undergraduates, Cultural Capital and College Success and Teaching, Learning and Intersecting Identities in Higher Education.

Richard C. Brienzi ’79
Brienzi is executive vice president and CFO of Ovation Payroll. After earning his associate degree in business administration from MCC, he earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting and finance from St. John Fisher College. He is a certified public accountant licensed in New York state. He is a director of the St. John Fisher College Accounting and Management Advisory Board and the MCC Foundation Board and executive chair of the 2013 PGA Championship at Oak Hill Country Club. He is a member of the MCC Foundation’s President’s Circle and a former chair of the Foundation’s Alumni Committee. He is also a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants.

Peter Monacelli ’73
A skilled artist, musician and craftsman, Monacelli is president and CEO of Monacelli Enterprises Inc. He also teaches part time for MCC’s Visual and Performing Arts Department. Monacelli has been involved with many downtown Rochester projects including converting Lewis General Tire and Walting Collision into the Little Theatre and renovating the rehearsal space for the Bucket Dance Theater. After earning his associate degree from MCC, he earned a bachelor’s degree with a concentration in studio arts from Empire State College.

James M. Sydor ’71
As president and owner of Stefan Sydor Optics, Sydor has helped carve a unique niche in the fabrication of precision quality, flat-surfaced parallel and wedged optics. His clients include the U.S. Department of Energy, U.S. Department of Defense and NASA as well as the motion picture industry. After discovering optics through his interest in photography, he earned his associate degree in optical systems technology from MCC. Sydor serves on the board of directors of the American Precision Optics Manufacturers Association and the Rochester Regional Photonics Cluster.

The MCC Alumni Hall of Fame was established in 1992 to honor the outstanding achievements of MCC graduates for their professional success, service to the community and support of MCC and the MCC Foundation. Including the newest inductees, there are 79 members of the hall of fame.

The Monroe Community College Foundation is a 501(c)(3), nonprofit organization. It was established in 1983 to secure private sector support to supplement and enhance public funding at Monroe Community College. To learn more, go to
