Bridges Snap, Robots Exert Power (04/22/2013)

MCC event for high school students aims to highlight STEM fields

ROCHESTER, N.Y. –April 18, 2013- More than 130 teens from seven different schools in New York and New Jersey demonstrated their engineering skills and knowledge today by designing and building mini robots and wooden bridges in the Career & Technical Education STEM Skills Competition at Monroe Community College’s Brighton Campus, 1000 E. Henrietta Road. The event aimed to inspire high school students to pursue an education in science, technology, engineering and math and to attain STEM careers.

Entries in the competition were designed and fabricated entirely by students. In one of two challenges, teams of students tested wooden bridges they designed and built in school to see whether their inventions could support the maximum load of a miniature test track, toy train and a suspended sand-filled five-gallon bucket. The other challenge called for students to test the battery-powered robots they designed in school. Each robot had to knock its opponent off a round table. The last robot standing was declared the winner.
