Children Explore Future Career Interests, College Life (08/06/2013)

About a dozen middle school children have been exploring different occupations and learning about college while developing their leadership and team-building skills as junior counselors for the Summer College for Kids program on MCC’s Brighton Campus.

The new junior counselor camp, which began July 8 and continues through Aug. 16, aims to expose children entering grades 7 and 8 to high-demand careers as a way to address the skills mismatch that local industries are experiencing today. It introduces the campers to tools that help them discover which careers may best suit them based on their personality styles and leadership qualities.

Each of the six weeks is dedicated to a theme -- including education, health care, technology and hospitality management -- that offers hands-on, adventure-based experience.

This week, children will play investigators at a mock crime scene with an MCC Public Safety officer, try their hand at manufacturing a metal part at our Applied Technologies Center, and disassemble and build electronics with an engineering science professor in a lab.
