|MCC Builds Students’ Awareness of Civic Responsibilities (11/02/2012)
WHAT: Monroe Community College is encouraging students to fulfill their civic responsibilities through two events on Monday, Nov. 5, as part of the college’s commitment to engage students in civic learning and democratic practice and, in the process, make a difference in the local community.
WHEN / WHERE:
Damon City Campus, fifth-floor atrium, 228 E. Main St.
A panel of judicial members, a county official and an MCC student will address the influence of jury selection on criminal courts, the need to recruit diverse jurors, and the opportunity to influence the community by jury participation. Scheduled panelists are Theodore Jones, associate judge of the state Court of Appeals; Craig Doran, administrative judge for the Seventh Judicial District; Charles Perreaud, Monroe County commissioner of jurors; and Richard Piendel, an MCC law and criminal justice major. Elizabeth Clifford, MCC professor of law and criminal justice, will moderate.
Brighton Campus, R. Thomas Flynn Campus Center atrium, 1000 E. Henrietta Road
MCC President Anne Kress will join judicial members and public servants in inspiring students to be informed, engaged citizens in their communities. They will urge students to cast their votes in Tuesday’s elections, attend town hall meetings, serve on juries and participate in other civic duties. Speakers include Theodore Jones, associate judge of the state Court of Appeals; William Moehle, Brighton town supervisor; and Karen Morris, Brighton Town Court judge and MCC professor of business administration.
DETAILS: Student leaders will also call on their peers to sign a pledge to democratic engagement. In November 2011, MCC was among the first community colleges to sign The Democracy Commitment, a national initiative that provides a platform for the development and expansion of programs and projects to ensure that every community college student has an education in, and a role in the service of, democracy.
