|West Irondequoit Resident Receives SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Classified Service (07/05/2013)
ROCHESTER, N.Y. –July 1, 2013- West Irondequoit resident Sylvia Lavin, department secretary for the ESOL/Transitional Studies Department at Monroe Community College, is a recipient of the State University of New York (SUNY) Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Classified Service.
According to Lavin, who began her MCC career in 2005, she is inspired by her colleagues. “As individuals and as a group they exemplify what a community college is all about,” she said. “They help a diverse population of students recognize and achieve their potential. And they do that with tremendous dedication and skill. I’m proud to be a part of this team.”
In her departmental role, Lavin supports approximately 80 faculty members and more than 900 students in the ESOL/Transitional Studies program. According to Department Chairperson Amy Burns, “Sylvia exhibits warmth, compassion and calm at all times. She is a treasure to the department and to the college.”
The SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Classified Service is an annual award that gives system-wide recognition for superior performance and extraordinary achievement by employees in the classified service. These awards demonstrate the university’s commitment to individuals who provide superior service to its students and the community at large.
