MCC Students Commit to Complete College, Urge Peers to Do the Same at Statewide Event (09/28/2012)

37 SUNY, CUNY community colleges participate in Completion Day initiative

ROCHESTER, N.Y. –Sept. 28, 2012– A Monroe Community College student who will be the first in his family to earn a degree and who inspires his siblings to pursue higher education by sharing what he is learning in and about college will join thousands of students across New York on Wednesday, Oct. 3, to promote college completion.

New York State Completion Day is an initiative of all community colleges statewide, including MCC, which have a combined enrollment of 335,000.*

The 30 State University of New York and seven City University of New York community colleges have set aside Oct. 3 to send a simple message: Students who complete an associate degree have better prospects for jobs, scholarships and transfer to four-year schools.

“It's my personal goal to complete college because I'll be the first in my family to graduate. By doing so, I will be setting an example for my siblings,” said Carlos Suarez, a criminal justice major who expects to earn his degree in June and continue his education at an area four-year school. “Having student leaders and other peers I can confide in helps me want to complete college.”

The community colleges have each planned multiple Completion Day events, including campaigns asking students to sign a pledge to complete their degree or certificate program. MCC faculty and staff will wear clothing bearing names of their alma maters and talk to students about what motivated them to graduate.
Other examples from across the state:

· At Finger Lakes Community College visiting speaker Isa Adney, author of Community College Success (March 2012, NorLights Press), will offer advice for making the most of community college. Her presentation will be made available to MCC and the other colleges via Web stream. It will also be available on FLCC Connects You Tube site; go to www.flccconnects.com.

· Erie Community College alumni who transferred to Buffalo State will talk to current students about their adjustment to a four-year college.

· Mohawk Valley Community College students can have their photos taken in graduation garb and get a quick review of their credits to determine how close they are to completion.
