|MCC Only Community College in N.Y. to Receive National Honor for Civic Engagement (03/04/2013)
ROCHESTER, N.Y. –March 4, 2013- Monroe Community College has earned a place on the 2013 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll by the Corporation for National and Community Service and is the only community college in New York state to receive the honor.
The honor roll recognizes higher education institutions for their commitment to service and civic engagement on their campuses and for their meaningful work in their communities.
In 2011-12, over 4,000 MCC students contributed more than 200,000 hours to a variety of civic projects. Several major projects, including the Horizons summer enrichment program at MCC, focused on enhancing early learning for high-need children from birth through third-grade. MCC students served as assistants to teachers and tutors to students at all grade levels in 67 Monroe County schools. In partnership with area child care centers, they developed literacy kits and activity packs for children and their families.
In one instance, MCC students supported other MCC students. Students in the Transition and Postsecondary Program for Students with Intellectual Disabilities (TPSID), an MCC-based initiative that supports students with intellectual disabilities as they transition from high school to a college environment, participated in service activities at various community sites while other MCC students served as their mentors during the program.
