|AmeriCorps Seeks New Members (08/05/2013)
ROCHESTER, N.Y. – August 5, 2013- Rochester’s AmeriCorps program is gearing up for an exciting new year – a year dedicated to helping students in the Rochester City School District (RCSD) succeed. During its 20th anniversary year, 33 AmeriCorps volunteers will be placed at a variety of city school sites and an additional 12 will be working in pre-collegiate and college readiness services within the Upward Bound and Liberty Partnership programs (at Monroe Community College and the University of Rochester) and the Rochester Education Foundation.
While the majority of participants have been chosen, Rochester AmeriCorps is still seeking a few individuals who can commit one full year to community service – from September 9, 2013 – August 24, 2014. Full-time AmeriCorps members receive a living allowance, health care and other benefits. In exchange for 1,700 hours of service, members also earn a $5,550 Education Award that can be used for college or to pay back student loans.
According to Rachel Tachco, director of the Rochester AmeriCorps program, recruitment is selective. “For the past several years, we’ve reviewed over 300 applications for 45 available slots,” she said. Selection criteria incorporates prior community involvement and volunteer experience, skills and interests, along with an emphasis on motivation to serve and commitment to personal growth. Once chosen, members participate in a 10-day orientation and training series. They also receive placement-specific training, monthly member development days and a mid-term retreat. “Our goals are to provide members with the skills and knowledge they need to effectively carry out their service responsibilities, to strengthen the ethics of service and citizenship and to promote personal and professional development,” Tachco said.
AmeriCorps is a national service program that engages Americans of all ages and backgrounds in a variety of community service efforts nationwide. Sponsored by Monroe Community College, Rochester’s AmeriCorps program is housed at the college’s downtown Damon City Campus.
