EMTs Can Earn Paramedic Certificate at MCC (01/22/2010)
Program meets needs of students seeking short-term training
ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Jan. 22, 2010 - The New York State Department of Education and the State University of New York have approved a paramedic certificate program at Monroe Community College.
A complement to MCC’s Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic A.A.S. degree program, the certificate program follows the same course sequence but is structured for New York state-certified emergency medical technicians interested in pursuing the state paramedic certification without obtaining an associate degree. Students receive classroom instruction and hands-on skill development as well as gain hospital clinical experience and field internships to earn a certificate at MCC and meet requirements for the New York state exam for certification as a paramedic. The program is administered through MCC’s Public Safety Training Center. MCC has been providing paramedic training since 1991 in response to the needs of students and local employers.
Paramedics provide a higher level of pre-hospital emergency care, including advanced assessments and administration of lifesaving medications, than EMTs. Paramedics are employed full or part time by fire departments, ambulance companies, and advanced life support providers throughout the state and the country.
Students may begin their coursework in MCC’s paramedic certificate program in the spring 2010 semester, which begins Monday, Jan. 25. For more information, contact Paul Bishop, coordinator of the Basic Emergency Medical Services program, at (585) 753-3712 or e-mail pbishop@monroecc.edu.
