For the past five years in June, Virginia and Carlos Carballada (Rochester) visit their daughter’s kindergarten classroom at the Rochester City School District’s Adlai E. Stevenson School No. 29. During the visit, the Carballadas announce to the children and their families that a scholarship to Monroe Community College will be waiting for the students when they graduate from high school. All the students need to do is stay in school, earn at least a B average and focus on realizing their potential. The 2018 cohort will potentially be members of the MCC class of 2032.

For inspiring Rochester city children (100 to date) to set their sights on a college education, the Monroe Community College Foundation will present its 2018 Salute to Volunteerism award to Virginia and Carlos Carballada on Thursday, Nov. 15 at the Foundation’s 29th annual Salute to Excellence dinner. The event will be held at the Joseph A. Floreano Rochester Riverside Convention Center. Approximately 300 business and community leaders are expected to attend.

The Carballadas established the Carballada Endowed Scholarship Fund for Rochester City School Students at the MCC Foundation in 2014. The scholarship honors their daughter Michele’s teaching career with the district. The Carballadas are longstanding supporters of the Foundation. Carlos Carballada, recognized for his career in banking, public service and higher education, has served as a member of the Foundation Council since 2003.

“Through their volunteerism and philanthropy, Virginia and Carlos Carballada are inspiring young people to take their first, early steps towards envisioning themselves as college students,” says Gretchen Wood, CFRE, chief advancement officer and executive director of the MCC Foundation. “The Carballadas’ passion for education is immeasurable and inspiring. The Salute to Volunteerism is one of the ways we recognize and thank them for their generosity and support.”

The Salute to Volunteerism has been awarded only five times in the dinner event’s 29-year history. Past recipients include past chairs of the MCC Foundation Board of Directors; James J. Ward (Bausch & Lomb, retired); Diana M. Lauria (Junior Achievement of Central Upstate New York); Arnold Klinsky (News10NBC; retired); and Margaret Sprattling (community volunteer).

The Monroe Community College Foundation seeks philanthropic investment to advance academic achievement, innovation, and the mission of excellence at the college.
