SPC 143 - Small Group Communication

3 Credits

Small group theory and process is examined from a communication perspective. Topics include leadership, goal setting, decision making, conflict, and the stages of group development. Students participate in groups.

Course Learning Outcomes
1.Identify the stages of group development.
2.Distinguish between task and relationship functions in groups.
3.Demonstrate strategies for group facilitation.
4.Identify how norms are used for effective group functioning.
5.Apply verbal and nonverbal active listening components in conversation.
6.Present research about a small group communication topic through the participation in a small group.
7.Write and revise an individual paper evaluating one’s assertive communication skills through the participation in a small group.
8.Write and revise a group paper identifying group process through the participation in a small group.
