PLE 222 - Firearms Instructor Course

4 Credits

This course provides students with the knowledge and skills required to instruct police and peace officers in the use of firearms in law enforcement. Forty-five class hours, twenty-five laboratory hours. Prerequisite: Successful completion of the Basic Course for Police Officers or Basic Course for Peace Officers, and three years of experience in a police or peace officer position that requires carrying a firearm. Sworn "active" police or peace officer. DCJS General Topics certification. 4 Credits. Course offered Spring only

Course Learning Outcomes
1. Meet the mandated requirements as prescribed by NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services.
2. Demonstrate an understanding of and apply shooting range safety and management.
3. Demonstrate an understanding of and interpret the New York State Penal Law, Article 35 as it applies to deadly physical force.
4. Evaluate firearms skills and identify weaknesses.
