ROCHESTER, N.Y. –March 5, 2010- Monroe Community College hosts its second annual Scholars’ Day, Saturday, April 3 to draw students and visitors into the intellectual excitement of scholarly work. The day is meant to be a celebration, an opportunity to recognize the accomplishments of MCC students, faculty and staff. It’s a day that knocks the ho-hum out of a traditional classroom by showcasing the potential of collaborative learning.
Scholars’ Day features a keynote address by Jared Diamond, a professor of geography at UCLA and Pulitzer-prize winning author at 10 a.m. in the Brighton Campus Theatre located in Bldg. 4.
Diamond, one of the nation’s foremost scientists, has published eight books, two monographs and more than 600 articles. In 1998, he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for the national bestselling book, “Guns, Germs and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies.” An extensive contributor to the field of conservation biology, he is the recipient of numerous awards including the National Medal of Science, the Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement and a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship. His conservation work has earned him several additional honors including the Carr Medal and the Conservation Medal of the Zoological Society of San Diego.
In addition to Diamond’s keynote address, MCC’s Scholars’ Day features a wide variety of sessions geared to promote scholarship across disciplines. These include: The Geography of Wine Country, Behavior and Distribution of Blue-Striped Grunts, The Contemporary African-American Experience, Female Icons in Popular Culture and the Engineering and Design of the Autonomous Robot.
MCC’s Scholars’ Day will be held 9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. on MCC’s Brighton Campus, 1000E. Henrietta Road. Parking will be available in Lots E and F.
