ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Nov. 2, 2017 – More than 12 colleges and secondary schools will participate in the first-ever Languages in Education Career Exploration Fair aimed at raising awareness of the high demand for teachers and encouraging students and job seekers to pursue a career in education involving world languages. The fair will be held from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 8, on Monroe Community College’s Downtown Campus, 321 State St., Rochester, in High Falls A & B.

Fair attendees will learn about career prospects in critical shortage areas, certification requirements and pathways in the education field, local options for teacher preparation programs, scholarships, and financial aid opportunities. World languages include English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) and American Sign Language.

Currently, New York state is experiencing a teacher shortage in bilingual education, bilingual special education and languages other than English, according to the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Postsecondary Education. In Rochester alone, the Rochester City School District seeks qualified English for Speakers of Other Languages teachers and bilingual teachers in all certification areas. The demand for teachers in New York state is projected to grow 5.8 percent, adding more than 17,000 new positions over 10 years.

Presented by MCC and Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES, the fair is being organized in partnership with the Mid-West Regional Bilingual Education Resource Network (RBERN), part of the New York State Education Department’s (NYSED) network of support for schools.
