Lt. Gov. Duffy to Deliver MCC Commencement Address (04/24/2014)

Lt Gov Robert J. DuffyROCHESTER, N.Y. –Lieutenant Gov. Robert J. Duffy will be the keynote speaker at Monroe Community College’s 51st annual commencement on Saturday, May 31, at 9:30 a.m. at the Blue Cross Arena at the War Memorial. An estimated 2,800 MCC students are anticipated to graduate.

MCC President Anne M. Kress said the college is honored to have a distinguished public servant and MCC Alumni Hall of Fame member addressing its graduates. “Bob Duffy is one of MCC’s and Rochester’s most inspiring success stories. We are grateful for his long-standing connection with the college and his firsthand knowledge of where an MCC education can take you.”

Duffy was inaugurated as the 76th lieutenant governor of New York in 2011. In his role as chair of the Regional Economic Development Councils, he has helped implement the Cuomo administration’s economic development agenda, focused on rebuilding New York’s economy and positioning the state to be a global economic leader.

“As chair of the Regional Economic Development Councils, Lt. Governor Duffy also understands MCC’s essential role in our region’s economic success,” said Kress, who serves on the Finger Lakes Regional Economic Development Council’s Higher Education Workgroup. “He will be speaking to the region’s future leaders and workers.”

Prior to his election as lieutenant governor, Duffy served as Rochester mayor from 2006 through 2010 and as Rochester’s police chief from 1998 until 2005.

Duffy holds a master’s degree from Syracuse University’s Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, a bachelor’s degree from Rochester Institute of Technology and two degrees from MCC: an associate in applied science degree (A.A.S.) in recreation science in 1975 and an A.A.S. degree in criminal justice in1988.

A native Rochesterian, Duffy is the fourth in a series of MCC alumni to deliver MCC’s annual commencement address. Previous alumni speakers include Cerri A. Banks, Ph.D. ’97, vice president of student affairs and dean, Mount Holyoke College (South Hadley, Mass.); Louis J. Andolino ’65, associate professor of political science, MCC; and George H. Moses ’02, executive director, North East Area Development, Inc.
