MCC Links STEM Education to Careers (02/27/2013)

Hrabowski, IIIROCHESTER, N.Y. –Professionals and students interested in how science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education can lead to rewarding and well-paying careers can learn from national experts at a one-day colloquium hosted by Monroe Community College. STEM: Preparing our Nation’s Future Innovators will be held Monday, March 18 from 8:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m at MCC’s Brighton Campus. The event schedule, featured speakers, and online registration are available at www.monroecc.edu/go/colloquia. The event is free and open to the public. Registration is required by Friday, March 8.

Freeman Hrabowski, III, president, University of Maryland, Baltimore County and chair, President’s Advisory Commission of Educational Excellence for African Americans, will kick off the event with his presentation “Beating the Odds: The Critical Role of Community Colleges in Preparing Students from All Backgrounds for Careers in STEM.” His presentation will be followed by a panel of education experts and an afternoon presentation on transforming undergraduate STEM education by David R. Brown, program director in the Division of Undergraduate Education at the National Science Foundation.

Morning and afternoon panels will explore STEM education and STEM careers respectively. Panelists include local employers and educators from across New York state.

According the national report Where are the STEM Students? What are Their Career Interests? Where are the STEM Jobs?, released by STEMconnector in January 2013,“STEM interest has been continually rising in high school students since 2004, and an astounding 25% of all high-school students are currently interested in pursuing STEM majors and careers. There were 14.9 million STEM jobs in the United States in 2012, a number that is projected to rise to 15.68 million by 2018.”

STEM: Preparing our Nation’s Future Innovators is the second in a series of Essential Discussions: Conversations at Monroe Community College. The series launched in September 2012 with a discussion on college completion.
