|Deep-Sea Explorer Ballard to Give Keynote at MCC’s 5th Annual Scholars’ Day (01/29/2013)
WHAT: Robert Ballard, discoverer of the Titanic, the German battleship Bismarck and numerous other contemporary and ancient shipwrecks around the world, will deliver the keynote address at Monroe Community College’s 5th Annual Scholars’ Day.

DETAILS: During his long career, Ballard has conducted more than 120 deep-sea expeditions using the latest in exploration technology. He is a pioneer in the early use of deep-diving submarines. He has also pioneered distance learning in America’s classrooms and around the world with the JASON project, an award-winning educational program that reaches more than one million students and 25,000 teachers annually.
Ballard has received prestigious awards from the Explorers Club and the National Geographic Society. He is also a recipient of the National Endowment for the Humanities Medal. Scientist Emeritus from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and President of the Institute for Exploration, Ballard is the Director of the Center for Ocean Exploration at the University of Rhode Island’s Graduate School of Oceanography. Operated by his Ocean Exploration Trust, his new ship of exploration is the E/V Nautilus.
Now in its fifth year, MCC’s Scholars’ Day is a showcase for academic excellence -- an entire day devoted to promoting scholarship across disciplines. The event, which runs from 11 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., includes presentations, panel discussions, performances and poster sessions by MCC faculty, students and staff.
