|New MCC Program Focuses on Protecting Citizens Against Cyber Threats (06/25/2013)
Local employers see high demand for cybersecurity skills
ROCHESTER, N.Y. – June 25, 2013 – Recent reports of cyberattacks on governments and corporations in the U.S. prompted Gov. Cuomo to declare last month that New York state must do its part to combat emerging cybersecurity threats.
Recognizing that the demand for workers with cybersecurity skills will increase as businesses and governments invest more heavily in protecting critical cyber infrastructure, area employers say there is a growing need for education and training for job seekers and for incumbent workers wanting to stay current in their field.
To address the industry’s workforce needs, Monroe Community College has developed a Cyber Security certificate program to prepare students for employment as specialists in information assurance, network security and cybersecurity.
The curriculum covers the risks and threats to information systems and provides students hands-on training using high-tech tools in developing strategies to protect data and computer assets and to counter cyberwarfare. It also prepares program graduates for exams to achieve industry-recognized certifications.
The program would benefit anyone interested in developing a solid foundation in cybersecurity, including new high school graduates, returning military veterans, information technology professionals, and law enforcement personnel.
Employment involving computer network and systems is projected to grow faster than the average for all occupations and add 286,600 jobs in the U.S. through 2018, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The certificate program, which was recently approved by the MCC Board of Trustees, is anticipated to be offered in fall 2013 pending approval by the State University of New York and the New York State Department of Education.
