Nelson A. Cupello, Head Men’s Soccer Coach

Head Coach Nelson Cupello enters his 17th year of coaching, with a record of 210-56-13. Coach Cupello, a former All-American at Monroe Community College and at SUNY Brockport led his team to a NCAA National Championship.

Cupello played professional soccer for the Rochester Lancers in the North American Soccer League (NASL) from 1975-80. He also played for the Rochester Flash in the American Soccer League from 1981-83. Upon his retirement from playing professionally, he concentrated on coaching. He was the assistant coach at MCC form 1978-84. He became the Head Coach at SUNY Fredonia in 1985, leading them to five consecutive SUNY AC appearances, winning or sharing the championship three times. Fredonia appeared in the NCAA Tournament four out the five years and lost twice in the semi-finals.

In 1989, Nelson received a Master of Sport Science degree with a concentration in Administration from the United States Sports Academy. He returned home in 1990 to coach the Tribunes and carry on the tradition. His teams have made the Regionals16 consecutive years, winning the Regionals in 1995, 2002, and 2004. Coach Cupello has been recognized by his peers as Region III Coach of the Year six times and Northeast Coach of the Year twice.

In 1996, Nelson became a part-time advisor in the Counseling Center. Nelson’s many interests revolve around his family, travel, movies, and soccer. He also holds the NSCAA Advanced National Coaching License and conducts soccer clinics throughout the country.
