Joe Sturnick is currently an Associate Professor in the Law & Criminal Justice Department at Monroe Community College, and he absolutely LOVES his job. He teaches classes in Introduction to Criminal Justice, PAC-TAC Internship. Principles of Investigation, and Community Values. He has been full-time faculty member since September of 2005 and has been on MCC's Faculty Staff, as an Adjunct, since May 1995. He has also taught criminal justice related courses for the RPD, Police Academy and nationally to various police organizations.
Joe and his wife Barbara have three grown children.
In June of 2005, he retired from the Rochester Police Department after serving in law enforcement for thirty years.
Joe was a police captain when he retired. His most recent assignment with RPD was as Executive Captain for the Patrol Division - East. He has served in many assignments over his 26 years with RPD and four with the Monroe County Sheriff's Dept.
Positions included Section Commander for the Goodman Patrol Section, Staff Duty Officer on the midnight shift, Commanding Officer of RPD's Information Systems Unit. Prior to that Joe held a wide variety of positions as a Police Officer, Investigator, Sergeant and Lieutenant. His assignments have included tours in the Lake, Clinton, Genesee and Highland Patrol Sections, Administrative Aide to (then) Deputy Chief Robert J. Duffy, Commanding Officer of License and Warrants, and Class Advisor for Police Academy training classes of Recruits and Supervisors. His career started with the Monroe County Sheriff's Department in 1975 where he served in the Parks Patrol, Marine Unit and Road Patrol.
Joe has earned an A.A.S. Degree from Monroe Community College (Criminal Justice), a Bachelor of Science Degree from S.U.N.Y. Brockport (Criminal Justice), and a Master's Degree in Public Administration from S.U.N.Y. Brockport. He is also a 2003graduate of the FBI's National Academy Session 214.
Joe has also been an active member of the Postprandial Club of Toastmasters International, a professional speaking and leadership development organization.
