Fine & Applied Arts

Whether you're interested in fine arts, commercial arts, performance, or interior design, MCC offers a fine and applied arts program that allows you to pursue your creative passions while learning with a hands-on approach. Many members of our faculty are nationally recognized artists and performers. Opportunities for learning take advantage of our well-known Mercer Gallery and our new recording studios, as well as providing performance opportunities for theater, vocal, and instrumental talents.

Transfer Programs


Advertising: Commercial Art (A.S.)

Commercial art students will develop skills in commercial art, commercial illustration, and media arts. Coursework in this program prepares students to transfer to four-year schools and eventually pursue careers in advertising, illustration, and graphic design. Admittance requirements: Pre-Algebra (one year high school math) or placement into Level 3 Math at MCC.


Cinema and Screen Studies (A.S.)

Cinema students will study motion picture theory, history, criticism and scriptwriting, as well as introductory-level production. Coursework prepares students to transfer to four-year schools to pursue degrees in cinema and television. After completing a Bachelor’s degree, students may go on to work in cinema or television production, management, and criticism. Admittance requirements: Pre-Algebra (one year high school math) or placement into Level 3 Math at MCC, placement into English 101 at MCC.


Communication and Media Arts (A.S.)

Communication students will study and analyze the various forms of mass media and develop professional skills in writing, production, and presentation. Coursework will prepare students to transfer to a four-year school, and eventually pursue careers in media, public relations, journalism, and corporate communication. Admittance requirements: Pre-Algebra (one year high school math) or placement into Level 3 Math at MCC.


Fine Arts (A.S.)

This program will prepare students for transfer to a four-year college to pursue a degree in a variety of arts related professions. Fine Arts students will study color theory, composition, art and design fundamentals, and art history. Experiences in broad-based areas such as critical thinking and creative problem solving, art history, and an array of studio processes provide support for careers such as studio art (painting, sculpture, printmaking), art education, art therapy, crafts (woodworking, glass, ceramics, jewelry), and design fields such as architecture, fashion design, costume and set design, industrial design and a host of other visual arts fields that require aesthetic and technical judgment and skills. Admittance requirements: Pre-Algebra (one year high school math) or placement into Level 3 Math at MCC.


Public Relations (A.S.)

Students in this program will develop a liberal arts background in communication theory, media writing, and public relations. The program prepares students for transfer to four-year schools to study public relations, organizational communication, marketing, and advertising. Students who complete a four-year degree may go on to work for corporations, government, non-profit organization. Admittance requirements: Intermediate Algebra with Trigonometry or Math 104 at MCC.


Music Performance (A.S.)

Music Performance students will study music theory, history, and performance, participate in ensembles, and take 12 one-hour private lessons each semester (cost not included in MCC tuition). This program prepares student to transfer to a four-year college to earn a bachelor's degree in. Students who plan to complete this course of study in two years should know how to read music, and have prior experience in vocal or instrumental performance. Admittance requirements: Students must prepare two contrasting pieces for a music-area audition. Career Programs


Visual Communication Technology: Graphic Design (A.A.S.)

Graphic Design students will develop an excellent foundation in the design and production of graphics, using both traditional and digital media, while introducing them to processes and practices common to the field. Through portfolio development, students will be able to transfer to a variety of four-year schools or seek entry level work in the field of visual arts. Careers include print design, package design, web design, motion graphics, gaming design and new media. Admittance requirements: Pre-Algebra (one year high school math) or placement into Level 3 Math at MCC.


Visual Communication Technology: Photography/Television (A.A.S.)

Students have the opportunity to explore the fields of photography, television, audio production and video through an intensive hands-on laboratory experience covering techniques in lighting, composition and editing. Coursework prepares students for transfer to four-year schools, or entry level positions in photography, video and television production, and radio. Admittance requirements: Pre-Algebra (one year high school math) or placement into Level 3 Math at MCC; Photography recommended.


Interior Design (A.A.S.)

Interior Design students study theory, design principles, drawing, history of design, and computer-aided drafting. Students may also participate in a co-op to gain work experience and explore different career opportunities. Graduates often begin work in this field as a trained apprentice in interior design or architectural offices, home furnishings and other retail businesses. Admittance into this program is during the fall semester, only. Admittance requirements: Pre-Algebra (one year high school math) or placement into Level 3 Math at MCC.

Certificate Programs


Interior Design (Certificate)

Interior Design Certificate students gain the basic skills and knowledge required to enter the interior design field as a design assistant. Students already working in the field will acquire more in-depth knowledge and upgrade their professional skills to help them advance in their careers. Admittance into this program is during the fall semester, only. Admittance requirements: Pre-Algebra (one year high school math) or placement into Level 3 Math at MCC.
