“MCC gave me time to figure myself out,” said alumna Ashley Ramble. After earning her liberal arts degree in 2007, she took her love of the French language across the border to the University of Montreal & the University of Quebec at Chicoutimi. After completing a master’s degree in Education from St. John Fisher College, Ashley now teaches French in grades 7 - 12 throughout Monroe 1 BOCES. Her advice to future MCC students: “Take a lot of different courses during your first two years of college. Use this time to explore!

Meet Jake Fike, proud member of the first graduating class from MCC’s surgical technology program. Jake now has a great job at Surgery Center at Sawgrass. He credits his instructors and MCC’s authentic operating room and teaching facility with giving him a strong foundation of skills and confidence. “There is a real need in the medical community for trained surgical technicians,” says Program Director, Mary Seeley. “Jake’s skills and positive attitude make him an asset on any surgical team.”

Before Agathi opened her event planning company, she had a passion to create. With the help of trusted advisors at MCC, she charted a path to a master’s degree and opened the doors to her own business. Agathi credits MCC as the crucial first step in turning her talent into a fun and sustainable career. A public speaking course at MCC helped her break out of her shell. " My professor taught me a lot about interpersonal communications. Today, my business depends on it! Communication is at least 80% of what I do."

Being close to city life, but not too far from his hometown outside Utica, NY, drew Zachary Sweet to MCC. While a student in the computer information systems program, he asked Professor Sandra McCormack about career and transfer options. She suggested RIT’s management information systems degree. “It was a pivotal moment for me,” he said. “She really understood me and how my courses would align with the RIT program.” Her advice also helped open the door to his job as an IT Project Coordinator at Wegmans. “I love being able to bridge the gap between people, processes and technology."

Through her work at Villa of Hope, Angie Perez-Delgado is all about opening doors for others. She came to MCC after dropping out of high school and having a child at 16. MCC offered an option that helped her get both her GED and associate degree. “The level of support was amazing. My professors kept me motivated at a very difficult time in my life.” That motivation continued as she earned a bachelor’s degree in human services and a master’s degree in health administration. “MCC showed me that I could overcome anything. It set the tone for high expectations and big dreams.”

Christine Wilson’s curiosity about the law attracted her to MCC’s criminal justice program. Growing up in the city, she said, there were certain perceptions about police officers. “I thought… let me get some knowledge about this.” She walked through MCC’s doors not sure where it would lead but ready to work hard and found the support she needed every step of the way. A two-year paid internship in law enforcement also came at a time when she needed it most. Christine now runs that same internship program for the College while she helps change perceptions about police officers in our community. “I owe my career to MCC,” she says.

Vasiliy grew his photography career one discovery at a time. His first discovery was in an MCC graphics design class. “I thought, this is it! This is my secret weapon.” As his confidence grew, his career took off. His eye for visual composition got him a job on the college newspaper and led to an invitation to photograph the student catalog, and to travel with MCC’s Model UN debate team. This was when he realized that “this crazy photography idea just might work.” His growing portfolio led to a staff photographer position at the Messenger Post Newspapers and later to a photography business specializing in portrait and lifestyle photography.

Tsion Teklemarim

Precision Machining and Tooling
Tsion Teklemarim, followed her dream of living in the United States, then followed her interest in technology to MCC and the precision machining and tooling certificate program. Tsion works as a skilled technician at Optimax Systems, a growing Rochester company that creates precision optics for medical, aerospace, military defense and more. “The program director at MCC was so helpful and encouraging to me,” she says. It was his contacts with area employers, paired with Tsion’s hard work, that opened the door to her job at Optimax. “I learn new things every day, and the people are so positive, so supportive.”
