DESCRIPTION:\nThe College community is invited to join the Honorable Women Club and SEGA to watch the documentary JULY ’64 on Wednesday, February 6th, from 3:00.-5:00 p.m., at the Damon City Campus in room 4151. The film explores why, what has been called “race riots,” erupted in Rochester, New York in the summer of 1964 and explains the effects they had in our community. After the film, participants will have an opportunity to have a conversation with the film’s director, Mr. Carvin Eison. \n\nThis event will mark the beginning of the celebration of Black History Month at the Damon City Campus. \n\nJULY ’64 tells the story of a historic three-day race riot that erupted in two African American neighborhoods in the northern, mid-sized city of Rochester, New York. On the night of July 24, 1964, frustration and resentment brought on by institutional racism, overcrowding, lack of job opportunity and police dog attacks exploded in racial violence that brought Rochester to its knees. Directed by Carvin Eison and produced by Chris Christopher, JULY '64 combines historic archival footage, news reports and interviews with witnesses and participants to dig deeply into the causes and effects of the historic disturbance. Eison and Producer Chris Christopher’s documentary, JULY ’64, garnered two New York State Emmy nominations for Best Director and Historic/Cultural Programming.\n
