Course Description/Objectives: “Literature in which the roles of women are significant and help explain contemporary attitudes. The works for reading and discussion are selected from many cultures, and cover the period from biblical to modern times.” (MCC Catalog) Welcome! I am nourished and challenged by reading and experiencing literature about and by women. By critiquing and analyzing fiction, poetry and drama we’ll see how writers over the years have freed their stories from the silence and portrayed the roles and concerns of women. I hope by the end of the course you, too, will feel informed, connected, and nourished. Participation: This is an interactive class; by that I mean we are all here to learn from each other so the focus will be on discussion, not lecture. So, to do well in this class, you must keep up with the reading. You will be asked to respond to all readings, complete formal and informal writing assignments, work in small groups, lead discussions, prepare presentations for the rest of the class and watch and respond to videos. Periodic quizzes will be given.
