Coaching Certification Information
The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) founded in 1954 began credentialing programs for professionals in 1975. The college offers the most respected certifications, internationally, in the areas of health/fitness and clinical exercise physiology. For the first time in 2003 the ACSM has established a voluntary endorsement program, the ACSM University Connection Endorsement Program, designed to recognize professional preparation programs that cover the knowledge, skills and abilities required by the ACSM certifications.

The ACSM Health/Fitness Instructor (HFI) is a professional qualified to assess,
design, and implement individual and group exercise and fitness programs for low
risk individuals and individuals with controlled disease. The HFI is skilled in
evaluating health behaviors and risk factors, conducting fitness assessments, writing
appropriate exercise prescriptions, and motivating individuals to modify and maintain
health habits and positive lifestyle behaviors for health promotion.
