Quotes That Inspire

I have born witness at MCC to an unbelievable generosity of spirit demonstrated with an outpouring of sharing one's time, talents, and resources. Submitted by MCC Foundation Alumni and Annual Giving Coordinator Karen Shaw '78, the following quote resonates with the broadest application of the term "philanthropy" here at MCC.

"The results of philanthropy are always beyond calculation." Miriam Beard, American historian and archivist

According to Karen, "When I happened upon this quote, I took pause. Why? I raise funds to support students at MCC. Every year I ask you to make a gift to the Annual Fund or to support the 5K Walk/Run for Scholarships on behalf of the MCC Foundation.

"We both know that your gift will make a difference in the life of a student. But how do we calculate the true significance of your gift; whether it is small, and helps a student over a bump in the road, or when it is larger, and funds most of the expense of an MCC education? We can't.

"What we can do is know that every gift exponentially impacts the life of the student recipient. The gift that provides support now will multiply in ways we can't ever imagine. While there are statistics, there is not a formula to calculate the end result of our philanthropy. In the last six months with so many challenges affecting us all, I have seen first-hand the generosity and camaraderie of our College community whether helping to close the 2020 Annual Fund or by participating in the 5K.

"Each day, because of my work at the Foundation, I am reminded that every great journey begins with the first step--whether it is your journey, a student's journey or especially my journey. Our philanthropy not only makes a difference to others on their journey through life, it makes a difference to you and me too because we know what we do today has a growing, everlasting impact."

Thanks, Karen for reminding us about the value and importance of what we do - inspire futures, passions, goals, careers, and confidence to cite just a few. This is a thought to hold onto as we traverse the challenges that continue to unfold in 2020 and beyond.

If there is a quote that inspires you, please submit it along with a brief narrative about why the quote resonates for you to PresOffice@monroecc.edu. "Quotes That Inspire" are shared with colleagues on Fridays in the MCC Daily Tribune.
